You spoke a word and life began

Told oceans where to start and where to end

You set in motion time and space

But still you come and you call to me by name…

Stars by Skillet

The first time I heard the song Stars, it halted me. I had to go back and listen multiple times before anything could sink in.

God breathed and the stars were created.

The LORD … breathed the word, and all the stars were born. – Psalm 33:6

Can you imagine just breathing and creating a multitude of stars? In our Milky Way galaxy, there are over one-hundred billion stars! There is estimated to be over one hundred billion galaxies in the universe. And with one single breath, God blew them all into existence. Wow! That blows my mind! But there’s more:

He counts the stars and calls them all by name! – Psalm 147:4

That makes me feel really tiny. And it should! The Creator of the universe exhaled a breath, created all these stars and He calls them by name! And this same All Powerful Inventor of the Universe wants to have an intimate relationship with me….

Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. – Genesis 2:7

We take our own breath for granted constantly—breathe in, breathe out, blow a bubble, blow up a balloon. A kid gets it (childlike faith?), they delight in such simplicity, but we overlook the power and majesty behind such a small effort.

There’s a Pearl Jam song called Just Breathe. Faith Hill and Shania Twain both sing Breathe, each about loving a person and breathing them in. Ana Nalick and Jonny Diaz encourage breathing through tough times. Each song an intimate expression of the depth of breath. Life-giving, love-expressing breath. But our breath is human. Our offering of breath to another human or for ourselves is limited.

Scripture is God-breathed. – 2nd Timothy 3:16

God has breathed life into our bones, He has breathed a world and a universe for our home, He has breathed His Words to us so that we can know Him and be with Him and be in awe of Him!

How many days out of my life have I been too busy with my own plans and agenda? Too busy doing my work, doing my thing, even doing ministry FOR the LORD, that I forget to take time to have a relationship with the One who breathed life into me, the One who gives me breath, the One Who Created the Stars! If I think about it like this for even one moment, I am burdened with conviction. Don’t I owe Him back His breath? Don’t I owe Him back my life? So why is it so easy to overlook the stars that burn proof of Him to me every night? Why is it so easy to ignore the breath in my lungs or the life in my flesh, even as I feed it and care for it every day to my own satisfaction?

Take a breath; look at your flesh- that was dust, that will be dust again…

Take a moment to look at the stars and remember that the magnificent God, who calls the stars by name, who also calls you by name, wants to have a relationship with you. Take in the beauty and just talk to Him, breathe back your awe and thanks, breathe back your praise.

To the One who holds the stars…
