Fall is my favorite season of the year.  Both the beauty of the colors as God paints the trees in color and the refreshment of a cool evening is a delight to my soul.  It stirs my imagination when I realize that everything this side of heaven is only a glimpse of the beauty to be unveiled there.

However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.” - 1st Corinthians 2:9

Beauty is a common aesthetic applied when considering the qualities of God.  Aesthetics, generally speaking, is the inquiry into the nature of beauty. The scriptures speak strongly and often of this important divine characteristic, which is expressed in a variety of ways such as when the Lord is praised for His glory, splendor, majesty, and excellence. In 2nd Chronicles 20:21, for example, Jehoshaphat exhorts his people to “Sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness.” The psalmist writes, “One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.” Literally hundreds of other passages praise God for His beauty or describe Him in aesthetic terms.

One of my favorite quotes regarding this subject comes from Jonathan Edwards.

"For as God is infinitely the greatest Being, so he is allowed to be infinitely the most beautiful and excellent: and all the beauty to be found through- out the whole creation, is but the reflection of the diffused beams of that being, who hath an infinite fullness of brightness and glory."

So while there are many invisible qualities of God, He has wonderfully revealed Himself in creation.  Recognizing the beauty of God’s creation has a way of stirring up gratitude.  A favorite hymn of mine captures this.  The hymn is titled “For the Beauty of The Earth.”  Folliott S. Pierpoint wrote this hymn is 1864 at the age of 29.  He was in awe of the beauty of the countryside that surrounded him.  Here is an excerpt….

For the beauty of the earth

For the Glory of the skies,

For the love which from our birth

Over and around us lies.

Lord of all, to Thee we raise

this our joyful hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour

Of the day and of the night,

Hill and vale and tree and flow'r

Sun and Moon and stars of light.

Lord of all, to Thee we raise, this our joyful hymn of grateful praise.

May we be grateful and inspired this season as we enjoy and marvel at the beauty of our God.
